Cass County Civil War Volunteers

Civil War Company ”I” of the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry had 97 men muster from Cass County. Their service and history are remembered and honored by an organization, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). An auxiliary is also supportive.

Presentations by several members will be given on Sunday, March 15 beginning at 2 pm at the American Legion Memorial Building. Artifacts from the Civil War will be on display.

Martin Mundorf is Commander of Col. William H. Kinsman Camp #23. He will give some history of the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry where Cass County men fought.
Department of Iowa SUVCW Graves Registration Officer is Roy Linn of Correctionville. He will tell of his experience to verify Civil War graves. Those service men receive marker stones and a dedication ceremony.
One of the Cass County soldiers was Captain Lafayette Mullins. He is the great-great grandfather of Robin Johnston, Griswold. Captain Mullins was active in Atlantic after he returned home.

The program is sponsored by Atlantic Rock Island Society, one of a series of Sunday afternoon presentations at the American Legion Memorial Building. There is no fee and everyone is welcome
